This was always a treat that everyone looked forward to at our house....especially the kids! They would stand in line and wait for their special little mug with their name on it. I ladled it out then topped it with lots of whipped cream and nutmeg. Oh, the memories!!
Now, the story behind the eggnog. My mom had an eggnog bowl that was given to her by my Grandfather. He worked for Sealtest Dairy in Pittsburgh. It may have been a promotional item, I am really not sure. Loving old things the way that I did, I fell in love with this bowl and the thoughts of old days and sleigh rides and snowy nights with cozy fires. Mom gave it to me and that's when I started making home made eggnog for Christmas Eve.
I looked this bowl up and found that it was made by Hazel-Atlas Glass Company. I believe it was probably made in the 1940s or 50s. It's one of my most treasured possessions. The bowl is still in excellent shape. Unfortunately, my mom didn't have the mugs to go with it.
Many years later my mother-in-law, also known as Grandma Bess here at the Hotel Leela, came across six mugs that had the same pattern as my bowl and she bought them for me. Five of them had Tom and Jerry written on them and one had Eggnog.
There is also a Tom and Jerry bowl that is identical to this eggnog bowl. Now, for anyone who doesn't know, Tom and Jerry is another Christmas beverage. The difference is that the Tom and Jerry is served hot and contains spices along with dark rum and brandy.
I'm so happy to have these treasures to pass down along with the memories that make them so special.
Please check my notes below before making. Now, let's mix up some eggnog!
