    Leela's weekend doggy treats

Leela's still pissed that we launched the site without any regard for her need to treat. So she put me to work this weekend and I came up with a damn fabulous recipe for her.

I searched high and low, close and abroad, to find the best ingredients to make my Leela Storm happy. I'm glad I had to go no further than our pantry... just a few feet away.

Leela absolutely loves - LOVES - peanut butter, and she'll do whatever it takes to get it. This bake is extra special for her because I used Justin's peanut butter. Like doggy, like daddy, this is hands-down our favorite - though I choose the honey variety to get my fix.

Here's what I came up with based on what we had on hand:

    • Sweet potato
    • Peanut butter
    • Wheat flour
    • Oats
    • Turmeric
    • Cinnamon

An egg helps hold it all together. This is a quick way to make the dog in your life love you more than ever, even if it's just for the 10 seconds it takes them to eat the treat.

    Here's the mixed ingredients

I rough-chopped the sweet potatoes and boiled them until they were very soft. Then I dumped out the water and mashed them with a spoon. After they cooled off, I added them to the other ingredients and used my mixer to bring everything together like above. Then I used my hands to knead the dough into a ball suitable for rolling out. I keep my mix on the dryer side.

That flat piece is just leftover dough that has no personality

After rolling out the dough into roughly a ¼" thick pad, I used Leela's bone cookie cutter to make the cookies. Leftover dough was reformed into a ball, rolled out again, and used for more cookies. You'll see that ugly flat piece that was just leftover dough. Leela doesn't care - she say's it looks like ass but tastes just as good as the others. Whew.

    🍽 Kitchen Critique

I think Leela would let me speak for her and let you know these things are a hit. Freeze leftovers if you have a bunch.

These give her a nice break from store-bought treats, and we know exactly what's going in them, how much, and it makes us feel good knowing how much she appreciates us.

That being said, she'll eat almost anything.

    ✔ Takeaways

    • Leela controls my life and the lives of everyone at The Hotel.
    • I would do anything to make her doggy life happy.
    • These treats are easy to make, made with fresh ingredients, no fillers, and will make your doggy super happy to be around you.
    • Treat your doggy right!

    • Yield: 40 treaties 1x

    • Method: baking
    • Cuisine: doggy

    Ingredients

    Scale
    • 1 cup wheat flour
    • 1 egg
    • 1 cup chopped sweet potato
    • 2 tsp turmeric
    • 1 tsp cinnamon
    • 2 dollops peanut butter
    • ¼ cup oats (I'll use ½ cup next time)

    Instructions

    Prepare Dough

    1. Boil the sweet potato until very soft. Drain and smash with a utensil. Let cool and add to a mixing bowl.
    2. Add all other ingredients with the sweet potato and mix until combined.
    3. If the mixture is too dry, add some lukewarm water - if too wet, add some flour.

    Make Cookies

    1. Knead the dough into a soft ball and roll out to about ¼" thick.
    2. Use a cookie cutter or a pizza cutter to make treat-sized pieces.
    3. Bake at 400º for 20 minutes and let cool completely before asking your dog for a taste-test.

    Notes

Be careful about what spices you use for your doggy - make sure they're safe.

You can use many variations of vegetables in doggy treats, so mix it up!

I don't see why not. I freeze what can't be used within 1 week.
